Dairy Free Hot Chocolate Bombs

Dairy Free Hot Chocolate Bombs

This Christmas season my kids loved making homemade hot chocolate bombs but they were not allergy friendly.  Unfortunately my 4 year old son has several severe food allergies.  He is allergic to dairy, soy, eggs, flour, nuts (except almonds and hazelnuts) and shellfish.  This narrows down our options quite a bit but I am so thankful there are companies out there that make allergy friendly ingredients.  I searched for alternative ingredients and found a way to make them!  Keep reading to find out how to make your own dairy free hot chocolate bombs at home.

Side note – Our allergist told us that the labels that say processed in a facility with xx allergen did not rule it out but we do test those items first before giving it to him regularly so check with your doctor if you have questions don’t just take my word on it.

What You’ll Need:

  • Silicone mold
  • Cocoa powder
  • Sugar
  • Chocolate Chips
  • Spoon
  • Marshmallows, sprinkles, or other fun toppings (optional)

These silicone molds are so versatile for many things such as these hot chocolate bombs, popsicles, and ice pops.   If you don’t shop on Amazon, I have also seen them at Target.

What To Do:

First, you’ll need to melt your chocolate.  I think this is the easiest way (no need to transfer it).  Put one heaping tbsp of chocolate chips into each mold.  Microwave for 30 seconds and give it a slight stir.  Microwave again 15 seconds at a time until melted.  Make sure to coat as evenly as you can up the sides.  You’ll want a thicker layer than you think so it doesn’t crack when you pop them out.  Add more chocolate chips if needed.

Leave to harden or place in refrigerator to harder faster.

Carefully loosen the edges and slowly push your chocolate mold out.

In one half of your chocolate mold, add in 1 tbsp cocoa powder + 1 tbsp sugar plus whatever toppings you like.  We added in 6 marshmallows.

Warm up a microwave safe plate.  Place the other half of the chocolate mold to melt.  Immediately place on top of your filled chocolate mold.  Smooth the edges to seal.

Heat up your dairy free milk of choice.  Drop in a hot chocolate bomb.  Watch it ‘explode’ and stir together.  The kids love watching the hot chocolate bombs explode and my 4 year old was so thrilled to have his own to enjoy!

Check out this video of how I made them in case the tutorial was hard to follow and the recipe card.  Enjoy!!  Let me know if you try it and what you think.
