Hospital Bag
Keeping it basic
The countdown is on! I cannot believe I am within the final weeks of this pregnancy and will be welcoming home a new baby boy soon. I always feel like my to do list is longer than the hours I have in the day but that’s a constant battle pregnant or not pregnant with my big family. It is easy to get overwhelmed but prioritizing the MUST do and WANT to do has always been something that has helped me stay focused and making lists. I find that being able to check items off from my list keeps me motivated.
Today I’m going over what I pack in my hospital bag and keeping it basic. There is so much you COULD bring but the question boils down to do you NEED it? For some, the answer will be yes and that’s what you go with while for others the answer will be no and that’s what you go with. There is no right or wrong way to do it, I just don’t feel the need for all the extras. This is what has worked for me in my experiences. I hope this will give you some good ideas to get you started on your own hospital bag checklist.

When I was pregnant with my first I excitedly packed the month before my due date with all but the kitchen sink. Everyone said you never know if you’ll need that or when baby will come. While that is true so far for all of my pregnancies my babes have been in no rush to be introduced into the world aka they have all been on or after my due date or induced. I also found that I brought a lot of unnecessary items with me to the hospital and tailored it down to half for my second delivery. That being said your experience may be different as every pregnancy and delivery is unique!
Hospital Bag ideas:
Here are a few hospital bag options I love – good foldable overnight bag, diaper backpack and if you feel you need for wheels a compact luggage option. Personally I’ve only ever needed the diaper bag and overnight bag while my husband always brings a backpack for his items.
My hospital bag basic packing list:
- socks
- underwear – granny panties
- loose lounge pants
- oversized tee
- nursing bra
- tank top
- oversized cardigan or thin zip up
- hair dryer or wand dryer (I have long hair and hate leaving it wet)
- cosmetic bag – travel size shampoo/conditioner, toothbrush, toothpaste, floss, face skincare items, makeup, chapstick, hair ties, deodorant, hair brush, etc.
- flip flops or slippers
- nursing pillow
- hair ties
- reusable water bottle
- phone / electronic chargers
Baby basic packing list:
- newborn baby outfit to go home
- car seat
- swaddle (I find it easier with the zip or velcro)
- baby photo outfit (optional)
